Dr. Steve Gilman, 83

 

 Dr. Steve Gilman of Ocala, Florida, passed away February 26 at his home. He was 83.

 Dr. Gilman was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, moving to Ocala in 1965. He was a 1960 graduate of University of Florida with a medical degree in Orthopaedic Surgery. It was there that he also met his lovely bride to be, Mary Lou DeNyse.

 He established the first private practice of Orthopaedic Surgery in Ocala. He was certified as a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, President of the Marion County Medical Society and Member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the University of Florida.

 Dr. Gilman also founded and was Director of Lifetime Fitness in 1986. He was also President of the Marion Saddle Club and served many local organizations and causes. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Ocala Jaycees and the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency and in 1983 was honored with the Marion County Family of the Year.

 Dr. Gilman was an avid horse enthusiast for the Morgan and American Saddlebred breeds. In addition to supporting his daughter Maria, he was well known for his winning drives with CH Carissimo and Our Perfect Day.

 Preceded in death by his devoted wife of 52 years, Mary Lou, and is survived by his brother Nate Gilman and wife Patti; children: Steve and Hope Gilman (Robert, Matthew, Katie), Lindy and Bruce Fowler (Jake, Maddie), Danny and Jennifer Gilman (DJ, Josh, Chris), Christie and Jack Kay (Jackie, Nicky, Tommy), and Maria Gilman.
